Well, the new bonus locations were handed out at 4:00 a.m. and then the planning began. I am now back in Raleigh and Mike was near Olathe Ks when he called Nicole about 30 minutes ago. I think he left St. Louis about 10:30 ...but I could be mixing up time zones...probably 9:30 local time.
Hoping for Denver tonight. He finished the first leg in the top 2/3 and was actually only 6,000 points below the number 29 finisher on Leg 1.........so there must have been a lot of people concentrated in that same 75k to 82k range. 6 people so far are out of the race. Kudos to all who are still in!! Go, Mike!

well I downloaded the score information from the IB website, and did some statistical analysis... Dad is currently in place 61 on points, place 59 on miles, and 59 on efficiency (points/mile). You might think that the trick is ride more miles, or to ride smarter (more points per mile) but the data say you actually need to do BOTH. Gotta ride smarter, gotta ride harder!
But when the data are all scaled to the Langford norm, where dad's performance represents a score of 1, the top riders are at most 20% better than him on efficiency, and all 20% to 40% better than him on miles.
So the bottom line is dad needs to burn up more miles to move ahead. That's the best advice midway through!
